Apps that help you pack

Having a hard time packing for your business trip? Well strangely enough there's an app for that. USAToday gets into depth on a few apps that ease you packing experience.

Packing +To Do (99 cents; available for iPhone)
• Overview: Create and edit packing lists or use sample lists. Edit item details (number, weight, value and notes). Pre-departure To Do list with over 100 tasks. E-mail your packing lists to family and friends. Can post list or ask for advice via Facebook or Twitter.
• Pros: High level of customization — ability to add, delete, rename or reorder any category, type or item. Exhaustive list spared me from having to type too much. Collapsible categories for less scrolling and ability to hide items already packed.
• Cons: List-making and data entry take too long. No family or baby/toddler list. Graphics not as engaging as others.
• Takeaway: Too time-consuming to use, though in fairness, it would require less time for future packing if referring to same list. It did remind me of a few things that I might have otherwise forgotten (flash drives, unlock ATM card).

Pack & Go (99 cents; available for iPhone)
• Overview: Create and edit a list of items to pack by selecting from 10 categories or ready-made lists. E-mail your packing lists to family and friends. Create a To-Do list and set phone alerts for deadline.
• Pros: High-level of customization. Exhaustive list of items. Engaging graphics that allow adding photos or background colors. Progress bar that keeps track of percentage of items packed. Ability to save your custom lists to modify and reuse later. Collapsible category folders to hide list items.
• Cons: Inability to eliminate some items, thus having to scroll through all of them in list-making. Having to type To-Do items, rather than selecting them from pre-made categories.
• Takeaway: Simple list-maker with few bells and whistles. Gets the job done, but like others, takes too long (especially To-Do list).

uPackingList Free (available for iPhone and Droid)
• Overview: Create and edit a list by tapping on any of 300 items. E-mail your packing list to family and friends.
• Pros: Simplest of the three to use. To-Do items that you can select, rather than typing. Collapsible or expandable categories for easy scrolling. Search box for looking up items.
• Cons: Distracting flash ads. Data input response sluggish, possibly due to flash ads. No ready-made packing lists to choose from.
• Takeaway: Very similar to others in getting the job done simply. Flash ads might be distracting, but price to pay for free app.
